Aedan Mangan

Aedan Mangan Design, planning, control, and estimation for continuum and medical robots.

I am a PhD student in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego, where I develop planning, control, and estimation algorithms for continuum robots operating in constrained anatomical environments. My research combines robot design with autonomy to enable safer and more capable medical robotic systems for minimally invasive interventions. I am advised by Prof. Tania Morimoto, collaborate with Prof. Nikolay Atanasov, and am currently a visiting graduate researcher with Prof. Jessica Burgner-Kahrs at the University of Toronto.

Before beginning my PhD, I worked full-time on Johnson & Johnson’s next generation surgical robotic platform (OTTAVA) and contributed to early development at Ictero Medical (see patents). I received my Master's degree from Rice University, where I focused on Global Medical Innovation.
